If your company is not up-to-date with its HST filings with CRA, you could be facing serious penalties and/or an audit. The best way to steer clear of the wrath of CRA is to file on time and pay any amounts owing by the due dates.

If you’re filing your own HST returns, it’s important to be as accurate as possible in your filings. Inaccurate information can lead to headaches down the road if your company is selected for an audit – potentially in the form of penalties and/or interest that may accrue as a result.

If your bookkeeper or accountant prepares and files returns on your behalf, it’s crucial to provide as much information as possible, so that your returns accurately reflect your business activity.

Deadline for filing T4s is February 28, 2011 for the calendar year 2010 for all employee wages and taxable benefits.

In order to prepare accurate T4 forms on behalf of a company, a bookkeeper needs a complete set of books to be able to see all wages and benefits that employees have earned during the filing period (the previous calendar year).

If employees receive taxable benefits above and beyond their salary or other wages, the value of those benefits needs to be added to the T4 calculations.

When providing your information to your bookkeeper, be sure to list any benefits that are taxable that were paid to employees throughout the year. Making sure your T4 preparer has all the info they need to process your forms efficiently and accurately.
