UnPlugged BC – Small Appliance Recycling Program

Beginning October 1, BC residents will have access to a new small-appliance recycling program called UnPluggedBC.

This new program will allow drop-off of most small appliances for recycling, redirecting lots of items that would otherwise end up in BC landfills.

Never heard of the Rule of 72? Neither had we. But, we sure are glad we came across this article, written by Canadian financial education blog, KnowMoney.ca. Their site helps educate the general public on some basic – but largely unknown – rules about how money works.

Do you know how long it will take for your money to double? Figuring this out is easier than you think! No super-computer, NASA rocket scientist, or even a calculator is required! All you need is the Rule of 72.

The Rule of 72 is an equation discovered by Albert Einstein, but so easy a 3rd grader can do it. It’s an easy way to approximate how long it will take your money to double.

How Much to Spend This Holiday Season

As this holiday season kicks off, you may already be worried about a credit card hangover come January. Many of us tend to spend more than we planned as we get into the spirit of the holidays or find good deals that are too hard to pass up. But what is the right amount to spend at this time of year?

There’s a rule of thumb, suggested by several personal finance experts, that you should spend no more than 1.5 per cent of your gross income. For a family earning $100,000, that’s $1,500, which is close to the typical holiday budget.

RBC’s survey found that Canadians, on average, expect to spend $1,218 on holiday purchases, including gifts, decorations and entertaining. It may seem like a lot of money to spend on a holiday, but the expenses accumulate quickly when you have a long gift list and host gatherings with family and friends.
