Minimizing your personal income taxes is no longer a matter of just waiting until the end of the year and filling out the forms. Book of the Month: The Happiness Advantage

November 16th, 2013

book_happinessadvantageWhat does individual happiness have to do with success in business? The two are much more interconnected than you may think.

Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work.

In The Happiness Advantage, Shawn Achor, draws on his own research—including one of the largest studies of happiness and potential at Harvard and others at companies like UBS and KPMG—to fix this broken formula. Using stories and case studies from his work with thousands of Fortune 500 executives in 42 countries, Achor explains how we can reprogram our brains to become more positive in order to gain a competitive edge at work.

Book of the Month: Cold Hard Truth – On Business, Money, & Life

September 1st, 2013

book_coldhardtruthCan you make millions just by “visualizing yourself rich” as some business prophets suggest? Don’t buy it, says Kevin O’Leary. If you want to be a successful entrepreneur and amass wealth, you’re going to have to work for it. But the good news is: with the right guidance, focus and perseverance, you can turn entrepreneurial vision into lucrative reality and have the personal freedom that only wealth can buy.

Kevin O’Leary would know. The much-feared and revered Dragon on the immensely popular show Dragons’ Den (and Shark Tank in the U.S.) started his company in his basement with a $10,000 loan from his financially savvy mother. A few years later, Kevin sold that company for more than four billion dollars. In this compelling, candid and, above all else, brutally honest business memoir, Kevin provides engaging, practical advice and lessons that will give anyone a distinct competitive edge.

3 Simple Ways to Increase Employee Motivation

August 21st, 2013

Motivating employees can be a challenge for any business and it takes a true leader to find incentives that staff members will value. The SOHO web site published an article by Robert Cordray that discusses a few different approaches to employee incentives that may inspire your team to go the extra mile for your company, including:

  • Cash Incentives – Robert suggests that any bonus given to an employee should be paid in a cheque separate from their normal pay. This helps them truly recognize the extra reward they’re receiving.
  • Public Praise – Everyone enjoys a pat on the back for a job well done, but be sure that the praise you give is sincere and true. Offering kudos to deserving employees in public makes employees feel valued and their efforts appreciated.
  • Tickets or Gift Cards – Many people find it difficult to achieve a good work/life balance, so rewarding staff with incentives that will make their time off more enjoyable is a great way to show appreciation.
